Monitor Report 3 [Male, 32, from Fukui, 20 years RC experience]

"Did I really win the monitor trial??:
I got a call at work from my wife to tell me that some package had arrived. It said I was in the monitor trial.
I couldn't believe I won until I actually saw the package!

When I opened box containing the Mini-Inferno 09, I just stared at it for about 30 minutes. Before giving it a run, I disassembled it.
I was really impressed with the high degree of completion! Definitely better than other 1/16 GP models.
But, there were a couple of things that concerned me.
The first was the flathead screws under the chassis holding the muffler mount were too long so the mount was a little wobbly
(* Kyosho has changed the length of these screws).
I replaced the M3-6mm with M3-4mm screws.
The second concern was some wobble in the clutch bell. I could rock the clutch bell by hand and slide it back and forward by about 1mm.
I measured the clutch dimensions with a micro meter.
 Pilot Shaft external diameter 3.99
 Metal Bush internal diameter 4.19
 Metal Bush external diameter 7.87
 Clutch internal diameter 8.06
Distance between pilot shaft and metal bush 0.2mm
Distance between metal bush and clutch 0.19mm
A needle bearing is also included so although I can't say for sure, these dimensions were a little concerning.
I replaced the metal bush with a ball bearing.
The result was the wobble was reduced to less than third of what it was at the start. (As this is a monitor trial, I replaced the bearings with the original metal bush).

Break-In:
As per the instruction manual, I removed the air cleaner and covered the carburetor with my finger and rotated the flywheel twice (I was a bit worried about dirt getting in with the air cleaner removed).
I mounted the chassis on the starter box and felt my pulse race. But when I pushed the chassis down, it started first time - great!
I ran through one tank without incident.
While running on the bench, I adjusted the needle 3 and half turns and the temperature was 66.8C.
For the 2nd tank, it started first time again. Running on the bench, again at 3 and half turns. The temperature reached 84.4C.
On the 3rd tank, I finally started running on the track. After starting the engine, I opened the throttle little by little and accelerated smoothly. Even at this early stage of the break-in, the acceleration was so great that I thought I had screwed the needle in too far.
I measured the engine head temperature again at 93.4C - no problem.

During the 4th and 5th tanks while screwing the needle a little at a time every five minutes, I started to hear a funny sound. I found it was coming from the clutch bell. I stopped the engine and checked the clutch bell and spur. But there didn't seem any out of the ordinary so I continued the break-in.

On the 6th tank with the needle at 3 and a quarter turns, I started to see sharp acceleration and top speed. The head temperature was 105.2C.

On the 7th tank, I ran into trouble when idling. The engine made a strange noise and stopped. The reason was the clutch bell. It seemed movement from the clutch bell placed too much load on the engine. I think the metal bush on the clutch bell should be replaced with a ball bearing.

Tanks 8, 9, 10 proceeded with out incident and break-in was complete.

My opinion after break-in is that there might be a problem in the clutch bell, but there is a high-degree of pre-assembly. The drive train of the Mini-Inferno EP has been reinforced to handle the power of the 09 so I had no concerns here.
I was also very impressed at how easy it is to operate the engine.
During break-in, the engine started first time, everytime. In my experience I have never known an engine where the break-in has gone so smoothly. I think even beginners will have no problems running the SIRIO 09 engine.
And also, the sharp acceleration and top speeds will impress experienced users as well.

In contrast to other 1/16 models available from other manufacturers, I believe this machine will provide great satisfaction.
Thank you very much for allowing me to participate in this monitor trial."
